Chapter Fourteen

A couple of weeks later, Sam and Henry met in the park to play ball. It was nice that it was relatively empty so early on a Sunday morning, and once they’d finished tossing the ball around, they sat on a bench under the shade of a large oak tree and caught up with each other’s news. Henry had some new project lined up for him, but he didn’t want to talk business. He was more interested in ferreting out whatever information he could about Zach.

“I tell you, there’s something else besides Zach living at home. Young, single, and rich doesn’t live at home with mommy unless there are other issues.” Henry handed him a bottle of water from the cooler they’d placed under the tree.

He and Zach had spent almost every evening cocooned together in his apartment since the day Zach had cornered him at the pastry shop. Last night, before he’d left Sam’s apartment to go home, Zach casually asked him if he’d like to join him and his friends for brunch, and explained how they met at least once a month to stay in touch. Sam agreed and looked forward to getting to know more about the two men who shaped Zach’s life. Maybe he could talk to them and find out what lay beneath Zach’s surface that frightened him so much.

Oddly protective of Zach now that Sam knew him better, Henry’s comment rankled, even more so remembering the time he and Zach had spent together yesterday. They’d watched a movie on Netflix, ordered in a pizza, and made love. However unassuming to the rest of the world Zach might seem, Sam liked being the only man who knew the hidden talent of Zach’s wicked mouth and tongue, and the way Zach moaned Sam’s name right before he came apart in his arms.

That appealing quality—Zach’s sweetness and complete unawareness of his looks—turned Sam on more than he ever thought possible. He couldn’t have been more different than the previous men in Sam’s life.

Six months before meeting Zach, Sam had reached a dead end—retired, angry, and somewhat sad—and figured this was how his life was meant to be for him. That’s when his desperation to feel the touch of someone—anyone—drove him to a bar to pick up a stranger. Stupid, foolish, and dangerous, although of course he’d used protection.

After he came home, drained, hurting, and faintly disgusted with himself, Sam vowed to remain celibate. And so he had until he walked up to the bar in Atlantic City and got drawn in by blue eyes he couldn’t forget and a sad but sweet smile.

“I don’t think it’s so strange.” He chugged down half the bottle of water and wiped his mouth on his sleeve. “Zach’s a family man, and his mother is a widow. It’s only natural he’d want to be close to watch over her.”

A speculative gleam entered Henry’s eyes. “You seem to know more about him than you did last time we talked.” He tossed his empty water bottle into the recycling bin.
